If you’re deciding what to do in Aswan, Egypt, start with Philae Temple, the Unfinished Obelisk and the High Dam. Then choose an experience that takes you beyond the main sightseeing route: a motorboat journey to a Nubian village, a visit to the West Bank’s tombs and monastery, or an evening at Philae’s Sound and Light Show.
Aswan also serves as a departure point for Abu Simbel excursions and Nile cruises toward Luxor. The important planning decision is how these experiences fit together. A four-hour sightseeing tour, a three-hour village visit and a nine-hour Abu Simbel excursion make very different demands on your day. This guide explains the experiences in our Aswan itineraries so you can choose a route that suits your interests.

Quick Picks: Your Aswan Experiences at a Glance
Not sure where to begin? These six experiences cover the most rewarding things to do in Aswan, from temples and tombs to Nubian village life and the Nile itself.

Philae, High Dam and Obelisk
Approx. 4 hours
Temple architecture, ancient stone-working and modern engineering in one introductory route.

Nubian Village by Motorboat
Approx. 3 hours
A private motorboat ride to Gharb Soheil with colourful houses, a local market and tea at a Nubian family home.

West Bank and St Simeon
Tombs, camel ride and monastery
The Tombs of the Nobles at Qubbet el-Hawa and a camel ride toward St Simeon Monastery.

Philae Sound and Light Show
Approx. 2 hours
An evening of narration, lighting and projections among the illuminated courts of Philae.

Abu Simbel Day Trip
6 to 9 hours
A separate excursion by road or by plane to the temples of Ramses II and Nefertari.

Nile Cruise to Luxor
3 nights, 4 days
Sail from Aswan to Luxor with guided sightseeing at Kom Ombo, Edfu and more.
Start with Philae Temple, the High Dam and the Unfinished Obelisk
These three Aswan attractions bring together temple architecture, ancient stone-working and modern engineering. They also form a practical introductory sightseeing route: our itinerary combines them in approximately four hours, including transportation.
Visit Philae Temple on Agilkia Island

Philae involves a journey across the water as well as a temple visit. You reach Agilkia Island by motorboat before exploring a complex that includes the Temple of Isis, the Temple of Hathor and the Kiosk of Trajan.
For travelers interested in ancient Egyptian architecture, this is an opportunity to look beyond a single monument. The surrounding Ptolemaic and Roman structures form part of the visit, giving your guide several different spaces and architectural features to explain.

See the Unfinished Obelisk
At the ancient granite quarries, the Unfinished Obelisk remains partly cut from the bedrock. Its unfinished condition is precisely what makes the stop useful: the monument and surrounding stone preserve evidence of the work involved in producing enormous architectural pieces.
It also complements Philae well, moving from finished temple architecture to the quarry work that made such monuments possible.

Rather than seeing only a completed obelisk standing in a temple, you encounter part of the construction process itself.
Understand Aswan’s modern landscape at the High Dam

The High Dam introduces another chapter in Aswan’s relationship with the Nile. The sightseeing programme includes views of Lake Nasser and an explanation of the dam’s connections with flood control, irrigation and electricity generation.

Plan it: If you want these visits arranged together, our private Philae Temple, High Dam and Unfinished Obelisk tour includes an English-speaking guide, entrance fees, private air-conditioned transportation and the return motorboat crossing. Meals are excluded.
Explore Nubian Aswan by Motorboat
A Nubian village visit changes the emphasis from monuments to the river landscape and community life.

Approx. 3 hours
Full experience, with pickup and return to your Aswan hotel or Nile cruise
Gharb Soheil
Colourful houses, a local market and a Nubian family home
Tea, coffee or karkade
Included at the family home
Our itinerary travels by private motorboat through the First Cataract area to Gharb Soheil. Rocky islands and West Bank scenery form part of the journey. Depending on the route and views, you may see landmarks including Elephantine Island, the Botanical Garden, the Tombs of the Nobles, St Simeon Monastery and the Aga Khan Mausoleum.
Good to know: Seeing a landmark from the boat does not mean the itinerary includes a stop there. This distinction matters when comparing Aswan boat tours.
In Gharb Soheil, the visit focuses on colourful houses, the local market and a Nubian family home, where tea, coffee or karkade is included. The complete experience takes approximately three hours, with pickup and return to your Aswan hotel or Nile cruise.
Choose this experience if you want river scenery and a village visit alongside your archaeological sightseeing. Meals, shopping purchases and additional activities are separate from the listed inclusions. You can read the full programme on our Nubian village motorboat tour in Aswan page.

Discover the West Bank’s Tombs and St Simeon Monastery
For another perspective on Aswan, cross the Nile to the West Bank and combine the Tombs of the Nobles at Qubbet el-Hawa with St Simeon Monastery.

The tombs occupy a hillside overlooking the Nile and Elephantine Island. They introduce the governors and officials connected with ancient Aswan and its southern routes. Our itinerary identifies Harkhuf among the figures associated with the necropolis, with inscriptions recording expeditions into Nubia.
The journey then continues by camel through the sandy landscape toward St Simeon Monastery. Its surviving walls, rooms and defensive features reveal a substantial Coptic monastic complex in a desert setting.

Know before you go: This excursion involves a climb toward the tombs and a camel ride. Consider both when choosing activities for your party, and discuss any mobility requirements before confirming arrangements. The programme includes motorboat transportation, the camel ride and entrance fees; exact timing is confirmed during the enquiry process. See the full St Simeon Monastery Aswan tour.
Experience Philae Temple After Dark

Illuminated courts, halls and colonnades on Agilkia Island, brought to life with narration, lighting and projections.
For travelers researching things to do in Aswan at night, the Philae Sound and Light Show offers an organised evening experience.
You travel to Agilkia Island by motorboat, then move through illuminated courts, halls and colonnades during a presentation combining narration, lighting and projections. Its subject includes Philae’s history and the story of Isis and Osiris.
The arranged excursion takes approximately two hours from pickup to return. However, the presentation is a group show with private road transfers, rather than a private guided temple visit. A private Egyptologist-guided temple tour is specifically excluded.
Daytime Philae visit
A guided exploration of the temple complex, usually combined with the High Dam and Unfinished Obelisk in about four hours.
Evening Sound and Light Show
A group presentation of about two hours, with private road transfers and a focus on atmosphere and storytelling.
The evening therefore offers a different experience from daytime sightseeing. Confirm the current show schedule and narration language for your intended date before making plans.
Take an Abu Simbel Day Trip from Aswan
Abu Simbel is a separate excursion from Aswan, with road and flight options described in our itineraries.

Both options visit the Great Temple of Ramses II and the neighbouring Temple of Hathor and Queen Nefertari. The visit also introduces the temples’ relocation to higher ground to protect them from the rising waters of Lake Nasser.
Approx. 9 hours
Abu Simbel by road, in a private air-conditioned vehicle
Approx. 6 hours
Abu Simbel by plane, with private local transfers
Approx. 40 minutes
Flying time each way on the flight option
| Planning detail | Abu Simbel by road | Abu Simbel by plane |
|---|---|---|
| Published overall duration | Approximately nine hours | Approximately six hours |
| Main transportation | Private air-conditioned vehicle | Return flights with private local transfers |
| Temple visits | Both principal temples | Both principal temples |
| Listed inclusions | Admission, English-speaking Egyptologist, bottled water and transfers | Flights, admission, English-speaking Egyptologist, bottled water, local transfers and meet-and-assist service |
| Meals | Excluded | Excluded |
The flight itinerary states approximately 40 minutes of flying time each way. That is the flight segment, rather than the duration of the complete excursion.
When comparing these Aswan day trips, consider the whole programme, including transfers and airport arrangements. Compare our Abu Simbel private tour by road with the Abu Simbel tour by plane, and ask for the applicable departure details, availability and quotation before choosing between the two. For a deeper look at the road option, read our guide to Abu Simbel to Aswan.

Continue from Aswan to Luxor on a Nile Cruise

If your trip includes Luxor, a Nile cruise can connect the destinations through a multi-day sightseeing itinerary.
Our three-night Aswan to Luxor cruise lasts four days. It begins with Aswan sightseeing, including the High Dam, Unfinished Obelisk and Philae Temple, before continuing toward Kom Ombo, Edfu and Luxor.
A cabin, guided sightseeing and full-board meals are included, with breakfast only on the final day. The same Egyptologist accompanies the guided stops. Prefer to sail the other way? Compare it with our 4-night Nile cruise from Luxor to Aswan, or browse every departure on our Nile cruise page.

One distinction deserves attention: although the cabin and guide are private, the ship carries other passengers. This itinerary is not a private vessel charter. Abu Simbel and the Nubian village visit are paid optional additions rather than standard inclusions. For route ideas that start in the capital, see our guide to a cruise from Cairo to Luxor and Aswan.
How to Organise Your Aswan Itinerary
The following combinations are planning suggestions based on the excursion durations above. Confirm pickup times and compatibility before combining separate experiences.
| Time available | Suggested approach |
|---|---|
| One day | Prioritise Philae Temple, the High Dam and the Unfinished Obelisk; consider the evening show separately |
| Two days | Combine introductory sightseeing with a Nubian village visit or the West Bank excursion |
| Three days | Reserve a separate day for Abu Simbel, then divide the remaining sightseeing according to your interests |
| Continuing to Luxor | Check your cruise’s included Aswan visits before arranging additional excursions |
Avoid booking the same attraction twice unintentionally. For example, the three-night cruise already lists Philae, the High Dam and the Unfinished Obelisk, while the Nubian village visit is optional. Short on time in Luxor? Our Luxor to Aswan day tour reaches the main Aswan sights in one long day, and you can see more options among our Egypt day trips.
Your Aswan Booking Checklist
- Choose your priority first: Philae’s temple architecture, Nubian village life, the West Bank or Abu Simbel.
- Check what “private” covers in each programme, because the evening show and the cruise include other travelers.
- Ask which entrance fees, boat crossings and transfers are included, and which meals are excluded.
- Allow for the climb and camel ride on the West Bank excursion, and mention mobility needs early.
- Confirm pickup times, and check the show schedule and narration language for your date.
- Avoid repeating attractions already included in your Nile cruise sightseeing.
Plan Your Aswan Visit Around Your Interests
Start with the experiences you most want: Philae’s temple complex, Nubian village life, the West Bank’s tombs and monastery, or a dedicated Abu Simbel excursion. Then check how they fit with your arrival, departure and any cruise sightseeing already included.

Aswan Travel Planning: Frequently Asked Questions
Can you visit Philae Temple, the High Dam and the Unfinished Obelisk in one day?
Yes. Our private sightseeing itinerary combines all three in approximately four hours, including road transportation and the motorboat journey to Philae. Exact pickup arrangements require confirmation. See the Philae Temple Aswan tour for the full programme.
Does the Nubian village tour visit Elephantine Island and the Botanical Garden?
Our programme describes possible views of these landmarks during the boat journey. It does not list island visits as included stops. Its main destination is Gharb Soheil. Read more about the Nubian village motorboat tour.
Can you visit Aswan on a day trip from Luxor?
Yes. Our Luxor to Aswan itinerary travels south by road through Edfu and Kom Ombo, visits Aswan’s High Dam, Unfinished Obelisk and Philae Temple, then returns to Luxor by first-class seated train. At approximately 16 hours, it is an intensive excursion rather than a short city visit. See the Luxor Aswan day tour.
What is the difference between visiting Abu Simbel by road and by plane?
By road, the excursion takes approximately nine hours in a private air-conditioned vehicle. By plane, it takes approximately six hours, with return flights of about 40 minutes each way and private local transfers. Both visit the Great Temple of Ramses II and the Temple of Hathor and Queen Nefertari, and meals are excluded in both cases.
Is the Philae Sound and Light Show a private tour?
No. The presentation is a group show with private road transfers, and the whole excursion takes approximately two hours from pickup to return. A private Egyptologist-guided temple tour is not included, so choose the daytime Philae visit if you want a guide-led exploration.
Are Abu Simbel and the Nubian village visit included in the three-night Aswan to Luxor cruise?
No. They are paid optional additions rather than standard inclusions. The cabin and guide are private, but the ship carries other passengers, so the itinerary is not a private vessel charter.
