One day in Luxor is a scheduling problem, not a sightseeing one.
Luxor is not short of things to see. It is short of hours in which to see them comfortably, and that is the actual problem a good Luxor day tour solves.
Here is the shape of it. The Nile splits the city in two. On the East Bank you have Karnak, where roughly thirty rulers kept adding to the same temple across about two thousand years, and Luxor Temple a short drive south. On the West Bank you have the Valley of the Kings, where more than sixty royal tombs have been uncovered, Hatshepsut’s terraced temple at Deir el-Bahari, and the Colossi of Memnon standing on their own in open fields.
Cover all of that and you are looking at a long day. Cover half of it well and you may enjoy yourself more. Neither answer is wrong, which is exactly why we do not sell one fixed Luxor excursion and hope it fits everybody.
The tombs hold heat by midday and the tour buses arrive mid-morning. A private day tour lets you get in front of both.
Every Luxor tour we publish is a standalone private programme, guided by a licensed Egyptologist, with your own air-conditioned vehicle and pickup from your hotel or your docked Nile cruise. That means the day can be reordered, shortened or stretched around you rather than around a coach timetable.

Both banks in a day is our full-day Luxor tour, roughly eight hours. One bank is a half-day: the West Bank tombs and temples, or Karnak and Luxor Temple on the East.
How early you want to be moving
Early matters here more than in most cities. Tour groups reach the Valley of the Kings mid-morning, and by midday the tombs are holding the day’s heat. If you are willing to start before sunrise, a hot air balloon flight slots in ahead of everything else.
What you want handled for you
Standard entrance tickets, the licensed guide, private transport and bottled water are confirmed inclusions across our Luxor day tours. Lunch is included on some and not others. Special-entry tombs such as Tutankhamun’s are separate everywhere in Luxor, and we say so before you book rather than at the gate.

Most disappointing day trips are not badly guided. They are badly timed for where the traveller actually woke up. Here is how each starting point changes the day.
From a Luxor hotel or a docked Nile cruise
This is the easiest version and the one most of our travellers use. Your Egyptologist guide meets you at your hotel or at your cruise ship, and the same private vehicle returns you there at the end. Nothing about the programme changes because you are sleeping on the water rather than on land.
The genuinely useful decision here is order, not content. Our advice is to put the Valley of the Kings first whenever the day allows it: coach groups arrive mid-morning, and the tombs hold heat as the day builds. That single sequencing choice does more for a Luxor day trip than any upgrade you can buy.
If a full eight hours sounds like a lot in high summer, split it. Take the West Bank tombs in the morning and either rest through the worst of the afternoon or move indoors to the Luxor Museum and Mummification Museum. Karnak reopens as a completely different building after dark at the sound and light show, and a felucca ride near sunset costs you almost no energy at all.
From Safaga port: the Red Sea cruise version
If your ship calls at Safaga, Luxor is reachable and back within the same port call. Our Safaga to Luxor day trip is a private shore excursion that collects you at the cruise exit door with a name sign, drives roughly three hours across the Eastern Desert in a private air-conditioned car, and covers the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut’s temple, the Colossi of Memnon and Karnak with a licensed Egyptologist guide. Lunch, standard entrance tickets and all transfers are included, from $200 per person.
The important part is not the sightseeing list. It is that the whole itinerary is built backwards from your ship’s all-aboard time, and the departure from Luxor is adjusted on the day if it needs to be. From Cairo, by flight, and home the same night
Plenty of travellers reach the end of their Cairo planning and realise there is no spare night for Luxor. There does not have to be. Our day trip from Cairo to Luxor by flight is about an hour in the air each way, with hotel pickup in Cairo, meet-and-assist at Luxor airport, a private vehicle and guide for the whole ground programme, and a return flight that gets you back to your Cairo hotel the same evening.
On the ground it covers the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut’s temple, the Colossi of Memnon, then Karnak and Luxor Temple after lunch. Return flights, standard entrance fees, lunch, transfers and guiding are confirmed inclusions. Special tombs and the optional balloon flight sit outside that.
It is a long day and we will not pretend otherwise. What it is not is a wasted one, and it beats the alternative of skipping Thebes altogether because the calendar would not stretch.

Luxor rewards a second visit more than almost anywhere else in Egypt, because the famous five are only the beginning. The special tombs question comes up constantly, so here it is plainly. The standard Valley of the Kings ticket admits you to three tombs from a rotating selection set by Egypt’s antiquities authority, and the rotation changes. Tutankhamun’s tomb, Seti I and Ramses VI are separate tickets, everywhere in Luxor, for everyone. We tell you that before you book instead of at the gate, and you can ask us to arrange them in advance.
Prices for most of our Luxor tours are quoted per trip rather than printed, because the figure moves with your date, your party size and which programme you choose. Where a published from-price exists, such as the Safaga shore excursion, we show it. Where it does not, we would rather quote you accurately than post a number that means nothing.

The best time of year
Luxor is a year-round destination, and the real variable is your own heat tolerance. Winter mornings on the West Bank can be genuinely cool, so bring a layer between December and February. In summer the answer is not to avoid Luxor but to start earlier and to keep the middle of the day flexible.
What to wear and bring
Light, breathable clothing and closed, comfortable shoes — the tomb ramps are sloped and the ground around the temples is flat but uneven. Add a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. Refill your water before you leave the West Bank in summer.
Children and older travellers
The day is long but manageable at a private pace: expect two to three hours of walking overall. Travellers who prefer less can shorten site visits or skip tomb interiors entirely without derailing anyone else’s morning. Mention mobility needs in your enquiry and we will build around them.
Meals and drinks
Lunch at a local restaurant is included on the full-day Luxor tour, the Safaga shore excursion and the Cairo flight day trip. It is not included on the half-day programmes. Drinks with lunch are a separate item on the Safaga day trip.
