NILE CRUISE PLANNING GUIDE
Start in Cairo. Sail through Luxor, Edfu, Kom Ombo and Aswan.
A cruise from Cairo to Luxor and Aswan can mean two very different journeys. Here is how to choose the right one and plan every connection around it.
Planning a cruise from Cairo to Luxor and Aswan starts with one essential distinction: beginning your holiday in Cairo does not necessarily mean boarding your cruise there.
You can combine Cairo with a flight south and a shorter cruise between Luxor and Aswan. Alternatively, a small number of specialist long sailings run from Cairo itself. These are different journeys, with different time requirements.
Understanding that difference helps you choose the right itinerary, coordinate transport and compare quotations accurately. This guide explains the routes, the sightseeing on our two Nile cruises, and the details worth checking before you book.

Can You Take a Cruise from Cairo to Luxor and Aswan Directly?

Yes, longer cruises departing from Cairo exist. However, you should not interpret every “Nile cruise from Cairo” package as a continuous voyage from the capital.
A journey that combines Cairo with a shorter Upper Egypt cruise has separate components: your Cairo stay, transport to the embarkation city, and the cruise itself. A continuous Cairo–Aswan sailing is a longer river itinerary, with published examples running to roughly two weeks.
Before comparing offers, ask one question: where do I actually board the ship?
| Journey | Boarding city | What it involves |
|---|---|---|
| Cairo stay plus Luxor–Aswan cruise | Luxor | Four cruise nights, plus your Cairo days and a connection south |
| Cairo stay plus Aswan–Luxor cruise | Aswan | Three cruise nights, plus your Cairo days and a connection south |
| Continuous Cairo–Aswan cruise | Cairo | A substantially longer sailing; check the vessel, route and departure date |
Our two cruises begin in Luxor and Aswan. Neither lists a Cairo departure or includes a Cairo stay, so tell us your holiday starts in the capital and we will clarify the connecting arrangements. If you would like a taste of Upper Egypt before boarding, see how a private Luxor day trip from Cairo works.
How Do You Reach Your Nile Cruise from Cairo?
Fly to Luxor or Aswan
Direct flights connect Cairo with both Luxor and Aswan, so you can choose either cruise direction without travelling overland to the embarkation city. Check flight availability for your exact dates before committing to the cruise.
Take the overnight sleeper train
An overnight sleeper train is another option between Cairo and Luxor or Aswan. Boarding stations and timetables need attention, so confirm the station printed on your ticket and arrange your onward transfer. For schedules and tickets, Seat61’s sleeper train guide is a useful independent reference.
Coordinate more than the ship’s boarding time. If your itinerary includes sightseeing on the first day, a late arrival could affect those visits even if you reach the vessel before it sails. Do not assume an overnight journey will leave you ready for a full programme the moment you arrive.
Ask your operator to confirm:
- The recommended arrival time.
- Where you will meet your driver or guide.
- Whether airport transfers are included.
- When the first guided visit begins.
- Whether arriving the previous evening would make the connection more comfortable.
Should You Cruise from Luxor to Aswan or Aswan to Luxor?
Our two Nile cruises cover many of the same principal sights, but their sequence and duration differ. Choose the direction that fits your arrival plans and the sights you most want early in the journey.
Four Nights from Luxor to Aswan
The five-day itinerary begins in Luxor, placing the East and West Bank visits near the start of the journey. It then continues through Edfu and Kom Ombo before the Aswan sightseeing programme.
If your holiday begins with a flight south from Cairo, this direction lets you start with Luxor’s great temples while the journey is still fresh. Explore more in our guide to Luxor Temple tours.

| Cruise day | Programme |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | Embark in Luxor; visit Karnak Temple and Luxor Temple |
| Day 2 | Visit the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut’s Temple and the Colossi of Memnon |
| Day 3 | Visit Edfu Temple, Kom Ombo Temple and the Crocodile Museum |
| Day 4 | Aswan sightseeing, including the High Dam and Philae Temple |
| Day 5 | Breakfast and disembarkation in Aswan |

The itinerary also lists the Unfinished Obelisk, although its day-by-day wording makes that visit conditional on the cruise programme. Confirm it in your final itinerary. You can see every detail on the 4-night Nile cruise from Luxor to Aswan page, or read our Luxor Aswan tour from Cairo guide for the connection south.
Three Nights from Aswan to Luxor
The four-day itinerary starts with Aswan’s sights before continuing to Kom Ombo, Edfu and Luxor. It is a compact way to finish in Luxor, close to its West Bank highlights.
| Cruise day | Programme |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | Aswan High Dam, Unfinished Obelisk, Philae Temple and embarkation |
| Day 2 | Leisure time in Aswan, followed by sailing to Kom Ombo and onward toward Edfu |
| Day 3 | Edfu Temple, sailing via Esna, then Karnak Temple and Luxor Temple |
| Day 4 | Disembarkation and Luxor West Bank sightseeing |

The final day includes the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut’s Temple and the Colossi of Memnon, followed by your Luxor drop-off. Review the 3-nights Nile cruise from Aswan to Luxor or the Aswan Luxor tour with a private guide. To plan the West Bank on land, see our private Luxor West Bank tours.
Which direction suits you? Choose according to the daily programme and your connections. The Luxor–Aswan cruise lasts four nights, while the Aswan–Luxor cruise lasts three. Both include sightseeing in the two cities, Edfu and Kom Ombo.
How Many Days Should You Allow?
When you plan a cruise from Cairo to Luxor and Aswan, count cruise nights, sightseeing days and connecting travel separately. A three-night cruise occupies four itinerary days and a four-night cruise occupies five. Neither automatically includes the time you want to spend in Cairo.
A planning framework, not a bookable package
3 nights in Cairo + 4 nights on a cruise = 7 accommodation nights.
You would then need to check how flights, embarkation, disembarkation and your international departure fit around those nights. An additional overnight stay may make sense if the connections otherwise leave little margin.
A search for a “four-day Nile cruise from Cairo” therefore needs careful reading. Establish whether four days describes the complete trip or only the time spent on the river.
What Is Included, and What Might Cost Extra?
A useful quotation separates accommodation, meals, guiding, transport and admission tickets. Here is how that looks on our two cruises.
Included
- Cruise cabin
- Guided sightseeing
- Embarkation and disembarkation assistance
- Full-board meals, with breakfast only on the final day
- Motorboat transfer to Philae
Not included
- Drinks
- Personal expenses and tipping
- Travel insurance
- Optional excursions
- Entrance tickets not explicitly listed as included
Full board should not be read as all-inclusive: on these cruises, the meal arrangement does not include drinks. Likewise, a guided visit does not by itself establish that every admission ticket is included. The four-night itinerary separately excludes extra-fee royal tombs, so request an itemised ticket list before booking.
| Check this | Ask for |
|---|---|
| Cruise accommodation | Vessel name, cabin category and occupancy |
| Meals | First included meal, final included meal and drinks |
| Sightseeing | Exact visits and whether guiding is private or shared |
| Admission tickets | Included sites and any supplementary tomb tickets |
| Cairo connection | Flights or trains, baggage allowance and transfers |
| Optional excursions | Separate price, timing and availability |
| Final transfer | Destination and whether it is included |
Does “Private Nile Cruise” Mean a Private Ship?
Check what the word “private” describes.
Our three-night itinerary provides a private cabin and private guide aboard a ship carrying other passengers. It is not a privately chartered vessel.
If privacy is central to your plans, ask separately about the cabin, the guide and your transfers. For families or couples, also request the actual cabin layout and occupancy before you confirm.

Is Abu Simbel Included?

Abu Simbel is an optional addition on both cruises rather than part of the standard programme. The four-night cruise page offers it separately by flight or road from Aswan, subject to confirmation of price and availability.
If this visit is a priority, discuss it before fixing your onward travel. Ask how it fits around the cruise schedule and whether you need extra time in Aswan. Our Abu Simbel trip from Aswan explains the road and flight options, and the Cairo, Luxor, Aswan and Abu Simbel tour shows a land-based alternative.
The same approach applies to other optional experiences: confirm the timing and cost before treating them as part of your holiday.
When Is the Best Time to Go?

For a cruise from Cairo to Luxor and Aswan with milder conditions for outdoor sightseeing, November through April is a useful period to consider. Egypt’s official tourism website describes these months as its moderate winter season, with cool-to-mild Nile Valley winters and hot, dry summers (see its geography overview).
Check the cruise first, then coordinate your Cairo stay and transport around it.
Planning tip
Your preferred travel date should also work with the ship’s actual departure schedule. For packing, consider comfortable walking shoes, sun protection and layers appropriate to the forecast for your dates.
How Much Does a Cruise from Cairo to Luxor and Aswan Cost?
Our cruise pages use price on request, so the cost of a cruise from Cairo to Luxor and Aswan depends on your travel dates, party size and preferred accommodation. Request a quotation for those details rather than comparing headline prices.
For a useful comparison, ask for the total payable amount, the currency, what is included and excluded, and the booking terms. For broader ideas on pairing a cruise with the rest of your holiday, explore our luxury Egypt tours with a Nile cruise.
