The river decision
Luxury Nile cruise Egypt: four nights south, or three nights north?
This is the single choice that shapes everything else. It is also, we suspect, the reason you are reading a page about luxury Egypt vacations rather than luxury city breaks.
We sail the water between Luxor and Aswan in both directions, and direction is not a technicality. It decides which city you fly into, which one you fly out of, and where the quiet days land in your trip.
Four nights, sailing south. Our 4-night Nile cruise from Luxor to Aswan is the slower reading of the river. The extra night is not extra sightseeing — it is deck time, which is the part people describe first when they get home. It suits journeys that end in the south, or that carry on to Abu Simbel afterwards.
Three nights, sailing north. The 3-night Nile cruise from Aswan to Luxor is the tighter, more efficient version, and it drops neatly into a shorter itinerary. Choose it when you are flying home from Luxor or heading back up to Cairo.
Either way, the practical benefit is the same and it is bigger than it sounds: you unpack once. No second hotel check-in, no repacking between cities, no early transfer to catch a train. For couples, and for anyone travelling with older parents, that one fact often settles the whole itinerary.
No room for a cruise in your dates? The same ground is coverable by road. The Edfu and Kom Ombo temples from Luxor takes in the two great Ptolemaic temples, and the day tour from Luxor to Aswan reaches the south and returns the same evening. Both are long days. We will say so before you book them, not afterwards.

Cairo and Giza: the loud, magnificent beginning
Most luxury Egypt itineraries open here, and the reason is geography rather than sentiment. An extraordinary share of what you flew for sits within an hour of the city — the plateau, the Sphinx, the great collections, the Islamic and Coptic quarters — so a well-built Cairo leg gives you an enormous amount without a single internal flight.
Our quiet recommendation, offered every week and taken far too rarely: give Cairo one more day than you think it needs, and spend it at Dahshur, Memphis and Saqqara. Giza is the postcard. Dahshur is where you can stand in front of a pyramid with almost nobody else in the frame, which is a rarer luxury in Egypt than any hotel suite.

Luxor: where the vacation stops being a sightseeing trip
Luxor is unreasonable. The temple density is close to absurd and it is split across two banks — the living East Bank of Karnak and Luxor Temple, and the West Bank of royal tombs, mortuary temples and the village where the tomb-builders lived. You can take the headlines in a day. You could also stay four and still be finding new corners.
If you keep only one piece of practical advice from this page, make it this: book the hot air balloon for a morning with nothing scheduled before late morning. It launches in the dark. What you will want afterwards is breakfast and a long shower, not another temple.
Luxor is also where the second-visit tours live. Dendera and Abydos are among the best-preserved complexes in the country, and most itineraries pass straight by both. So does Esna and El Kab. If you have been to Egypt before, that is where we would point you now.

Aswan and Abu Simbel: the part everyone underestimates
Aswan changes the tempo, and most travellers only realise they needed that once it happens. The river widens, granite islands split the current, and the days get softer. The classic three — Philae Temple, the High Dam and the Unfinished Obelisk — fit comfortably into one private day, and the Nubian village by motorboat gives you an afternoon that is about colour and community rather than antiquity.
Then there is the question we are asked most often about the south: is Abu Simbel worth it? Yes. Two colossal temples cut into a cliff, then lifted and rebuilt in the 1960s to keep them above a rising lake — a story almost as good as the temples. We run it two ways: by flight from Aswan when your days are tight, or by road when you would rather see the desert and keep the day flexible.
For a slower evening in Aswan, there is Philae after dark and, on the west bank of the river, the desert walk up to St Simeon Monastery and the Tombs of the Nobles.

Who these vacations are usually built for
Honeymooners. Egypt is a quietly brilliant honeymoon, mostly because it gives you two very different registers in one trip: the spectacle of Giza and Karnak, then long unhurried stretches on the river where the largest decision of the afternoon is which side of the deck has better shade. Families. Children usually enjoy Egypt more than their parents predict, because the subject matter is unbeatable — camels, quad bikes, a motorboat to a Nubian village, tombs that look exactly like the book at home. The skill is in pacing rather than content: fewer sites, more variety, and a private schedule you can cut short the moment someone has had enough.
Travellers who need an easier day. The genuine constraints in Egypt are heat, steps and distance. Several tombs involve a descending ramp and temple floors are uneven. Private travel solves most of it, because the vehicle waits where you left it and the day ends when you say it does. Egypt is longer than it looks on a map — Cairo to Aswan is roughly London to Edinburgh. Most people underestimate the country and overestimate their stamina, in that order.

Look closely at what changes in the longer versions. You are not only adding sites; you are adding space between them. A morning with nothing in it.
