Dendera Zodiac Signs: The 12 Ancient Egyptian Zodiac Symbols Explained

Dendera zodiac signs carved in the circular relief

Look up at the right ceiling and the sky looks back. The Dendera zodiac signs are twelve constellations carved in the late Ptolemaic period, once set in a rooftop chapel of the Temple of Hathor near Luxor.

They look familiar: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Leo, Pisces. Yet this is no modern horoscope. It is a carved sky that blends Egyptian religion with astronomy shared across the ancient Mediterranean and Near East.

The relief now lives at the Louvre in Paris. The temple where it stood is still in Egypt, and it makes a memorable day from Luxor.

What Are the Dendera Zodiac Signs?

The Dendera zodiac signs are the twelve traditional constellations shown inside a circular astronomical relief. It was installed in a rooftop chapel dedicated to Osiris at the Temple of Hathor.

The twelve are Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces.

Think of it as a map of the heavens, not a birth chart. Its purpose was to express cosmic order: observation, religion and symbol in one carved circle.

Zodiac constellations and Egyptian star figures share one circular relief.

The ritual meaning of the whole composition is still debated by scholars.

The 12 Dendera Zodiac Signs and Their Symbols

The twelve constellations share much of their imagery with the zodiac we know today. Some figures, though, wear Egyptian artistic dress.

Zodiac signFigure on the relief
AriesA ram
TaurusA bull
GeminiPaired human figures, the Twins
CancerA scarab-like creature, not a crab
LeoA lion
VirgoA female figure
LibraScales, a balance
ScorpioA scorpion
SagittariusAn archer with composite features
CapricornA sea-goat hybrid
AquariusA water-bearer
PiscesA pair of fish

This is a broad guide. It is not a full translation of every religious or astronomical symbol on the relief.

Aries, Taurus and Gemini

These three show the link between Dendera and the twelve-sign system shaped by Babylonian and Hellenistic traditions.

Aries is a ram, Taurus a bull and Gemini a pair of figures. A ram also carried other religious meanings in Egypt, so not every ram on a monument means Aries. Placement in the composition is what identifies it.

Cancer, Leo and Virgo

Cancer is the surprise. Instead of a crab, Dendera shows a scarab-like creature.

The scarab was tied to renewal and the rising sun. That does not mean every layer of scarab symbolism applies here. Leo appears as a lion and Virgo as a female figure.

Libra, Scorpio and Sagittarius

Libra is a set of scales, a clear emblem of balance. Scorpio is a scorpion, a creature that also held protective associations in Egyptian art.

Sagittarius is an archer with composite features, like other hybrid beings in ancient sky maps.

Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces

Capricorn is a sea-goat, one figure built from several animals. Pisces is a pair of fish.

Aquarius follows the water-bearer tradition. It invites comparison with Hapi, the god of the Nile flood, but that is not a firm identification.

What Is the Meaning of the Dendera Zodiac?

The meaning stretches well beyond twelve signs. The relief is often called a planisphere: the celestial sphere shown on a flat surface. It gathers constellations, decans, planets and figures that hold up the sky.

The Louvre lists its elements as zodiac signs, decans, constellations, four female sky-bearing figures and eight falcon-headed divine figures. See the Louvre collection record.

Dendera Zodiac explained with decans, planets and supporting figures
Decans, planets and sky-bearing figures surround the twelve signs.

Three layers make up its meaning.

1. The twelve zodiac constellations

Together they follow the Sun’s apparent yearly path. Their presence shows zodiac imagery had entered Egyptian temple art by the Greco-Roman period.

It does not prove the zodiac began in Egypt. It shows Egyptian tradition absorbing ideas from Mesopotamia and the Greek world.

2. The 36 Egyptian decans

Decans are star groups from a far older Egyptian way of measuring time.

Thirty-six ten-day periods give 360 days, with five extra days completing the 365-day year. Decanal stars also helped mark the hours of the night.

3. Planets and celestial events

The relief includes the five planets visible to the naked eye: Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn.

Astronomical analysis helped date it to about 50 BCE. Some features are read as eclipses. How they tied to chapel ceremonies is not fully established.

In the Osiris chapel at Dendera, the sky was part of the sacred architecture.

Dendera Zodiac History: When and Where Was It Created?

Carved around 50 BCE

In the eastern Osiris chapel on the roof of the Temple of Hathor, Dendera

The Dendera Zodiac dates to around 50 BCE, in the final decades of Egypt’s Ptolemaic dynasty. The Louvre places it in the reigns of Cleopatra VII and Ptolemy XIII.

It was never a standalone chart. It formed part of the temple’s architecture and religious decoration.

The Osiris link matters. Osiris stood for death, regeneration and renewed life. A sky map in that setting belongs to a temple world, not to a newspaper horoscope.

Who Discovered the Dendera Zodiac?

The relief became widely known to European scholars through Napoleon Bonaparte’s Egyptian expedition. According to the Louvre, expedition members documented it on January 24, 1799.

Its circular arrangement looked so sophisticated that it sparked fierce debate about how old Egyptian astronomy really was.

Where Is the Original Dendera Zodiac Today?

The original is at the Louvre Museum in Paris, in the Egyptian Antiquities Department.

The Louvre’s record places it in the Sully Wing, Level 0, Room 325. Its inventory number is E 13482, also recorded as D 38.

The Dendera Zodiac is now part of the Louvre’s Egyptian antiquities collection.

The version at Dendera is a reproduction, not the original ancient relief. More on its journey in our Dendera Zodiac at the Louvre guide.

Good to know: Paris keeps the original carving. Egypt keeps the temple, the setting and the astronomical ceilings that give it meaning.

Dendera Zodiac vs. Modern Zodiac Signs

Both use the same twelve named constellations. They are not the same system.

Dendera ZodiacModern horoscope zodiac
Ancient religious and astronomical ceiling reliefAstrological system used for horoscopes
Includes constellations, decans, planets and deitiesEmphasizes twelve astrological signs
Dates to about 50 BCEShaped by many traditions and later adaptations

Reflects an ancient celestial worldviewUsed in contemporary astrological practice

The Dendera Zodiac is an important historical source for ancient astronomy and astrology. It does not establish the scientific validity of modern horoscope predictions.

Can You See the Dendera Zodiac at Dendera Temple?

You can see the temple, not the original. Visitors to the Temple of Hathor walk the building that housed the zodiac and study its surviving astronomical decorations.

On a visit with Egypt Luxury Trips, you can explore:

  • The Great Columned Hall
  • The restored astronomical ceiling
  • The sanctuary and offering halls
  • The side chambers
  • The underground crypts and rooftop chapels, when regulations permit

The columns, painted ceilings and side chambers are astonishing in person. Our Dendera Temple guide explains what to look for.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Dendera Zodiac Signs

What are the 12 Dendera zodiac signs?

They are Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces. These zodiacal constellations sit inside a larger Egyptian astronomical and religious relief.

How old is the Dendera Zodiac?

The relief dates to about 50 BCE, which makes it more than 2,000 years old. The Louvre assigns it to the late Ptolemaic period.

Where was the Dendera Zodiac found?

It decorated the ceiling of an eastern rooftop chapel dedicated to Osiris within the Temple of Hathor at Dendera in Upper Egypt.

Is the Dendera Zodiac an astrological chart?

It contains zodiacal and planetary imagery linked to ancient astrological traditions. It is better described as an astronomical planisphere than a modern horoscope chart.

Why are some Dendera zodiac signs different from modern symbols?

The relief was made in an Egyptian religious setting that absorbed Greek and Babylonian celestial traditions. Some constellation figures therefore follow Egyptian artistic conventions, such as the scarab-like Cancer.

What are the 36 decans on the Dendera Zodiac?

Decans are star groups tied to the Egyptian division of the year into ten-day periods and to astronomical timekeeping. They are distinct from the twelve zodiac constellations.

Who discovered the Dendera Zodiac?

Members of Napoleon’s expedition documented it on January 24, 1799. The Louvre names General Desaix, Louis Pierre Aimé Chastel and Dominique Vivant Denon in its account.

Can I see the original Dendera Zodiac in Egypt?

No. The original is in the Louvre Museum in Paris. At Dendera you can see the temple where it was installed and a reproduction linked to its former position.

Did the ancient Egyptians invent the twelve zodiac signs?

There is no evidence that the complete twelve-sign zodiac began in Egypt. Its development is linked to Babylonian astronomy and its later adoption in the Hellenistic world. Dendera shows how the system entered Egyptian temple art.

What is the difference between the Dendera Zodiac and Egyptian zodiac birth signs?

The Dendera Zodiac is a surviving historical artifact with astronomical and religious imagery. Modern Egyptian zodiac birth signs assign personalities or deities to birth dates, and those ideas should not be attributed to the ancient relief.

Why the Dendera Zodiac Still Matters

The Dendera Zodiac shows how ancient peoples drew the heavens from observation, belief and art.

Its twelve familiar signs draw the eye. The decans, planets and divine figures around them tell the richer story.

It is also a story of exchange. Made in Egypt in the late Ptolemaic period, it preserves ideas shaped by Egyptian, Babylonian and Greek worlds.
