UPPER EGYPT TRAVEL GUIDE
Leave the Red Sea behind. Wake up beside the Nile.
An Aswan tour from Hurghada is less a day out than a crossing: from the Red Sea coast, over the Eastern Desert and down the Nile Valley to Egypt’s southern gateway. It is entirely doable, and Aswan rewards the effort. But the quality of the trip is decided long before you reach Philae, by one question: how much of your holiday do you want to spend on the road?
Private-transfer providers typically quote around seven hours each way, although your real timing depends on your hotel, route and stops. That is why I recommend an overnight stay over a same-day return: it hands back the hours you would otherwise spend in a vehicle and lets Aswan unfold at a civilised pace.
This guide covers the distance and drive time, compares trip lengths, introduces the best things to see once you arrive, and shows how to link Aswan with Luxor or a Nile cruise. The Egypt Luxury Trips experiences featured below begin in Aswan or Luxor, so any transfer from Hurghada is arranged and confirmed separately.

How Far Is Aswan from Hurghada?
Road distance depends on the route and your exact pickup and drop-off points. Published private-transfer listings range from about 518 kilometres to roughly 550 kilometres, so treat the figure as a route estimate rather than a fixed number for every hotel. Most routes cross the Eastern Desert to the Nile Valley, then run south along the river through towns such as Luxor, Edfu and Kom Ombo.
Drive time is usually quoted at between six hours fifty minutes and seven hours. Your confirmed schedule should also allow for rest breaks and any stops you add along the way.
The simple maths
7 hours out + 7 hours back = 14 hours in transit, before sightseeing, meals or longer breaks. That is why duration matters more than distance alone.

Can You Visit Aswan on a Day Trip from Hurghada?
A same-day visit means fitting your sightseeing between two substantial road journeys. Before you book any Aswan day trip from Hurghada, ask for a written schedule showing the departure time, expected arrival, time at each attraction and the return to your hotel.
If Aswan is a priority, I recommend an overnight stay. A shorter attraction list also makes the visit far more manageable than trying to combine every major monument. Here is how the main formats compare:
| Trip format | What works well | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Same-day return | Avoids an overnight hotel stay | Long transport time around a limited sightseeing window |
| Two days, one night | Separates the outbound and return journeys | Needs careful coordination of sightseeing and hotel arrangements |
| Three days, two nights | Creates space for Aswan plus a separate excursion such as Abu Simbel | Adds accommodation and another day away from Hurghada |
| Nile cruise extension | Combines your transport, hotel and sightseeing in one floating base | Direction, dates and transfers must be confirmed at both ends |
Getting from Hurghada to Aswan
Private road transfer
Private transfers between Hurghada and Aswan are widely advertised. They connect your accommodation with your destination, but treat the transfer as transport rather than a sightseeing package.
Connecting through Luxor
If you also want to see Luxor, plan the holiday as linked stages rather than returning to Hurghada after every excursion. Our Luxor to Aswan day tour starts in Luxor and returns there by train, so you still need to reach Luxor first.
Flights and public transport
Check date-specific services before you build the itinerary. Never assume a direct flight, convenient connection or suitable departure exists for your dates, and compare the complete journey, including waiting time, with a road-transfer quote.
Six questions to ask before you accept a transfer quote
- Is the price for one vehicle or per traveller?
- Does it cover your exact hotel?
- How much luggage can the vehicle carry?
- Are rest breaks included in the estimated duration?
- Is it transport only, or does it include sightseeing and a guide?
- How will the return journey be arranged?
A driver and an Egyptologist guide perform different roles. Check the written inclusions rather than assuming a private car comes with guided monument visits.
What to See in Aswan
Aswan’s attractions include island temples, ancient granite quarries, a Coptic monastery and the sites tied to its historic role as Egypt’s southern gateway. The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities lists Philae, the Unfinished Obelisk, St Simeon Monastery and Elephantine among its principal landmarks.

Philae Temple
Philae is the natural focus of a first visit. Its monuments include the Temple of Isis and a smaller temple dedicated to Hathor, with much of the surviving complex dating to the Ptolemaic period. Rescued from rising waters and rebuilt on Agilkia Island, it is reached by a short boat ride, which is half the pleasure.
Our Philae Temple, High Dam and Unfinished Obelisk tour combines three stops in approximately four hours.
The High Dam and the Unfinished Obelisk
These two stops show Aswan’s engineering across thousands of years. The Unfinished Obelisk lies in the ancient granite quarries, where a monumental shaft was abandoned in place, while the High Dam holds back Lake Nasser. Our itinerary visits the quarries and obelisk first, then the High Dam, before continuing to Philae.
Three named attractions with transport arranged between them keep an Aswan day focused, rather than a loosely defined “city tour”. With a spare half day, add the St Simeon Monastery and Tombs of the Nobles.

A Nubian village by motorboat
For a different rhythm, our Nubian village motorboat tour visits Gharb Soheil. It includes a private motorboat journey, a local guide and a visit to a Nubian family home with refreshments, lasting approximately three hours from and back to your Aswan hotel or Nile cruise.
This is a motorboat experience, not a felucca sailing trip.

Should You Add Abu Simbel?
Abu Simbel is a destination in its own right rather than another stop in central Aswan. Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities places it around 300 kilometres south of Aswan, and its two principal temples are associated with Ramesses II and with Hathor and Queen Nefertari.
If you are considering an Aswan and Abu Simbel tour from Hurghada, allow for all three stages: reaching Aswan, visiting Abu Simbel and returning to Hurghada. Our Abu Simbel private road excursion begins in Aswan, returns to Aswan and lasts approximately nine hours; it is not a confirmed Hurghada departure. I recommend reserving a separate day for it rather than attaching it to your arrival drive.
A Practical Overnight Itinerary
The outline below is a suggested structure, subject to transport, accommodation and attraction arrangements being confirmed.
DAY ONE
Travel to Aswan
Keep the arrival day flexible. Once your transfer timing is established, decide whether there is comfortable space for sightseeing or whether you would rather settle in and watch the Nile at sunset. Avoid committing to a tightly timed activity before you know your arrival time.
DAY TWO
Sightseeing and onward travel
Choose a focused programme such as Philae, the High Dam and the Unfinished Obelisk. Then check that the planned return journey leaves enough time for the visits and for breaks.
DAY THREE · OPTIONAL
Abu Simbel or the Nile
If you want Abu Simbel as well, extend the outline to three days and give the excursion its own confirmed schedule. Or keep it gentle with a Nubian village visit by motorboat.

Can You Combine Hurghada with a Nile Cruise?
Yes, with planning. Our cruise itineraries run in two directions, so choose the one that fits where your journey begins and ends:
3 nights, 4 days
Aswan to Luxor
A shorter sailing that ends in Luxor. The ship carries other passengers, although your cabin and guide remain private.
4 nights, 5 days
Luxor to Aswan
A slower sailing that finishes in Aswan, with more time on board and along the river.
Neither itinerary establishes that Hurghada transfers are included. Confirm the ship, cabin, sailing date and transport at both ends before you make other reservations.

Price and Booking: What to Ask
There is no confirmed price for a Hurghada-to-Aswan package in our current material, so ask for an itemised quotation covering the exact journey you want. Check whether it includes:
- Hurghada pickup and return, or onward travel
- Private transport and guiding
- Entrance tickets and boat transfers
- Accommodation and meals
- Optional excursions
- Taxes, additional charges and cancellation terms
Compare equivalent itineraries. A transport-only quotation cannot be judged against a package that includes hotels, tickets and guided visits on price alone.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to drive from Hurghada to Aswan?
Private-transfer listings estimate roughly seven hours each way, usually quoted between six hours fifty minutes and seven hours. Your exact timing depends on your hotel, the route and any stops.
How far is Aswan from Hurghada?
The road distance is roughly 520 to 550 kilometres, depending on the route and the exact pickup and drop-off points.
Is an overnight Aswan tour better than a day trip?
For a less compressed itinerary, I recommend an overnight stay. With around seven hours each way, a same-day return is a substantial transport commitment around a limited sightseeing window.
Can you visit Philae, the High Dam and the Unfinished Obelisk together?
Yes. Our Aswan sightseeing tour combines all three in approximately four hours, starting from an Aswan hotel or Nile cruise.
Is Hurghada hotel pickup included in your Aswan tours?
Our tours do not confirm Hurghada pickup. Their stated departure points are Aswan or Luxor, so any connecting transfer needs separate confirmation. Send us your dates and we will check the options.
Can I add Abu Simbel to an Aswan trip from Hurghada?
Yes, but give it its own day. Our Abu Simbel road excursion begins and ends in Aswan and lasts approximately nine hours, so it works best as a separate day rather than an add-on to your arrival drive.
What should I bring?
Comfortable walking shoes, sun protection, your travel documents, any necessary medication and an overnight bag if you are staying in Aswan. Ask your accommodation and transport provider about luggage arrangements before departure.
Plan Around the Journey First
Choose your trip length before you choose your attraction list. A focused Aswan visit with realistic transport arrangements will always beat a crowded itinerary with unclear timings.
